Another Place, Another Time
November 2, 2007It was a Saturday. 9 o’clock in the morning, that’s when it happened. A strange man approached us cautiously but quickly. He said,” You four, come with me.” I was probably the smartest one there, but I had followed the man anyway. It was just me, Fred, Brad and Michael. We all willingly followed him. He led us into this building I had never seem before, I guess I never really looked for it. We all said nothing the whole way there.
When we got into the building there were a few small offices, and big machines. I didn’t know where we were or what this guy was doing. We went up to an elevator and got inside. He brought us up to the fourth floor and then into a small office. He said “I know a way to travel in time. I want you four to go back for me. You see I want a question answered that should have been answered a long time ago.” He said as he handed me a piece of paper. Don’t read it, it’s the question, ask it when you arrive there.” He said.
I should have thought a little more about how crazy this guy really could have been, but it was too late. I thought I had to say something now so I said, “Why did you choose us to do this?”
“Well, and when we figured out how to do this we sent a 34 year old man back. He never came back after 7 months, but we found a note that he wrote at the place he disappeared. And we thought we could only send back children, you all look nervous it’ll all work out.”
I probably should have thought about my decision a little more. But the next thing I knew, I was getting ready to do this. These people gave us very interesting looking cloths and gave us backpacks filled with food for the way there. The machines in the front of the building turned out to be a machine that makes very odd-looking supposable ‘time travel’ machines. The man whose name I still do not know, said we have to go back on a certain type of day. We have to take the big machine, put it on the railroad tracks and sail with the wind. He said it would be a foggy, windy, and very cloudy day.
After a few hours it was the right time. The machine we used to go back in time had a perfect fit for the railroad tracks, places for five people, and a sail like on a sailboat. “Here, read it.” The man said. “It’ll be fine you don’t have to worry about anything.” He said as he handed me a piece of paper it said: The railroad tracks would continue when you are back in time. Follow them until you reach land. You needn’t worry about not moving, if you do this on a windy, cloudy, and misty day it will work and the sail on your machine will take you to land. And… never send a man back, only children, because they’re going to kill me.
Just reading that gave me shivers up my spine. But now we were off. We were with some of the men from the building. The man only said one thing before the wind began to pick up “Good luck.” My mind was racing, why would he say that? After this whole time, he had told us everything would go well, and now he said good luck?!
The wind started to pick up, then more, more and more… After about 8 minutes we were lost, way deep in the fog. Then we saw it a small castle in the distance. It was tiny, surrounded by fog on the right of the landscape. We all looked none of us said anything, but I knew that everyone was thinking that it was real. We stayed on the boat for what seemed like days and finally arrived on land. We went on foot for a while and arrived at the castle gates. There was a man there who was very oddly dressed. He asked, “What is your purpose here?”
“We came here… uh… we need a question answered.” I replied
“Pass” he said with a determined voice.
Now we were inside. I was thinking about the man who previously came here. I didn’t know what happened to him, but honestly I didn’t want to. As we walked towards a throne in the distance inside the castle, everyone stared; they did not talk but stared. We got to the throne the man sitting there looked like the king. I approached him and bowed. He nodded his head as if accepting my bow.
“If you have a question, then I have an answer young one.” The king said
I slowly took off my backpack and unzipped it. I reached inside, pulled out the paper with the question on it. I had finally got the question answered.
